From thriving to decline and back to glory again; walking on this historic old street and you will understand the beauty of history. In 1908 the Japanese built a railway along the seashore and called it the beach railway or Hamasen in Japanese. Nowadays it is referred as the south Gushan area. Hamasen is actually a tidal land. Long time ago it was the hub for railway and ocean cargo. Fishing was also busy here. It was the center of politics and economy. Back in time in Kaohsiung, Hamasen was the pioneer of modernized community and the origin of modernization in Kaohsiung. The first modernized city street system, the first installations of tap water, electricity power system, and electric lamps. However, the restricted backland, relocation of the train station and the fishermanˇs association, and a decrease in population made Hamasen a decaying area. Today, thanks to the renovation project, it has been given a new life that attracts crowds of tourists. Hamasen once again is thriving.
